5 out of 5 stars Coolest monitor ever, period   April 10, 2010
M. Vaughn (Austin, TX)
54 out of 61 found this review helpful

---Full 1080 HD. Do not be fooled by these others monitors claiming 'high-def'

---Weighs 7 pounds, not 27, making it adjustable with the push of a finger

---The response time is 2ms...not 5ms(gamers will understand the magnificence of this wonderful feature)

---About as thick as my thumbnail

---$200 bucks....are...you...kidding....me......this monitor is well worth $300-350 when compared to all the old prehistoric garbage still being pushed out there for more money that it cost to buy this one.

---10 million to 1 dynamic ratio. People say, "Dynamic ratio is just a sales crutch," but I DARE you to find another monitor out there even remotely close. You wont because no one else has such technology out yet besides what is inside this monitor. If you do find something close, I bet it is at the very least 100-200 bucks more and only around 1 million to 1. 10 million to 1, enough said here.

---Perfect for watching Hulu and blu-ray with the ol' lady (you can watch from anywhere in the room)

---The touch-screen buttons work phenomenally and even better than the ones on my 3 grand 52" inch Samsung LCD television in my living room. People complaining about this feature probably still use rotary dialer phones.

---Doesn't look like a computer monitor, so when time to upgrade in 5 years, it will be great for the kitchen and no one will ever think "Well, that is ghetto, this guy just put his old computer monitor in his kitchen."

---The games I play, Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Team Fortress 2, have never looked better. I actually did not know they could look this good, even when I had full settings on before. My 19" Dell monitor had 8ms and now this Asus FLIES at 2ms...are you kidding me?! TWO MS....this is as fast as my Razor(Deathadder) gaming mouse. Not only can I alt+tab lightning fast now, but there is no distortion in my game anymore after leaving a game minimized for a while. I knew I was getting an amazing monitor, but I had NO clue it would enhance my video card so much. I seriously feel like I upgraded to running dual video cards(cross-fire). Screw buying a new video card when you can kill two birds with one stone by getting this Asus monitor.

---The only cons to this monitor are in the lack of assembly direction. Although super easy to setup(almost instant), the directions leave out the fact that you have to pop-out a plastic piece from the back-side to screw in the single screw for the stand(no tools needed). Figuring this out took me about one minute extra but I can see how it might cause some serious confusion. The piece is not 'ripped out' but actually has pieces that pop in and out, if you save the piece you could pop it back in.

---------On a happy side note here, I was able to look at this square piece closely and truly examine the beauty of this monitor's paint job. From a distance(1-2 feet) it looks black but it actually has super fine blue sparkles glossed into the paint, which makes it worth about $500 dollars more than it cost. It is a beautiful piece of art.

---------On another happy side note, there are some complaints about the stand. I have no qualms about it whatsoever. It looks badass; my friends are like "that is badass." The screen starts much lower than my previous 19" Dell stand could even be pushed down to. I would estimate that the screen starts 2-3 inches from my desk...my center of vision could not be better placed. There is no 'wobbling' at all with this monitor and it never will. The tilting back a few degrees is a non-issue, trust me.

---The only other lacking direction is not actually due to the monitor but from a video card manufacturer, ATI/AMD. I have an ATI Radeon HD 4850 and after reading some reviews on NewEgg(more expensive) for this product, I found the solution. The monitor was showing a 1" black border around the display(only when set to full 1920×1080), and all I had to do was download the Catalyst Control Center from ATI/AMD website and set my 'Scaling Options' to 0% Overscan. Problem solved. Note: Other brand video cards do not have this issue.

---One last good thing, more-so for you, not me...you no longer have to read boring ass reviews on websites that make it hard to read reviews and strain your eye sockets, as this will be the last review you will need to read. I mean, do not take my word for it, read the other reviews on this lovely piece of art. But once you can't read reviews anymore, you will remember this review and be like, "That one guy on the internet was right, I should have stopped reading after seeing his review because I can't find anything as good as the Asus." Then you will get this monitor and see for yourself. Free shipping!

5 out of 5 stars Unsure About This Monitor? Read.   May 30, 2010

I often see a lot of conflicting reviews about this particular monitor because of either it's stand, brightness, not full 1080p (I don't know where that one came from) or some other subjective thing that really isn't a concrete fact either way. If you're on the fence about buying this monitor, I was in your position shortly ago, and I went for it. It has everything I needed, 1080p, HDMI, LED backlit, fast response time, decent size, etc.

I'm using it mainly for gaming, I have my Xbox 360 and PS3 hooked up to it currently, not a PC however (the only difference being the PC looking significantly better.) The transaction has been flawless, and everything I connected to it worked instantly with no issues. No dead pixels. Very fast arrival, came 2 days early.

The picture is great. It's very sharp, and very bright. I don't know why a lot of people have to turn down the brightness; they must have the monitor in a very dark or closed off area, because I found the brightness at maximum to be perfect, and does not strain my eyes, even in darkness. Contrast is very good, and in some cases can be extreme for games where you're in a lot of wilderness settings, (ala. Crysis, Bad Company 2, Just Cause 2, or Red Dead Redemption) and may require turning it down a few notches in the game. The colors for the most part are fairly accurate, though I wouldn't use this monitor if you're going for professional photo-editing and the like. Overall, I'm happy with the picture, and unless I really started to get into the elite critique aspects, I don't think there's much you could dislike about it.

No external speakers, but one headphone input in the back. I really, really wish they would have put in 2 HDMI ports, because just one more would've made this monitor perfect. That way I wouldn't have to switch out the back every time I go from 360 to PS3, but that isn't really a big deal, it's fairly quick if you tie the cords together at the end.

Now, to address the main drawback most people talk about: The ring stand.

I don't have any problem with the ring stand. I will admit that it's not extremely durable, and it does move fairly easy, but you do have to give it some force. I really don't see a way for it to move backward or forward unless you're openly banging against the table or monitor. I have my monitor sitting on the back of a corner desk and if I touch the top of the monitor and push, it does slide back, but not very much. And it will pull forward, and stay in position. I've accidentally banged my chair off of the desk, and I've never had it bad enough where the monitor changed position or fell over. You'd have to live in a house with kids running and jumping all over the place constantly to have this happen, because I don't see how it would move that much by itself otherwise. So as far as the stand goes, it's a very nice aesthetic idea, and it looks nice, but it could be improved. I don't think it's awful though, and I don't think it's worth a negative review.

I've also heard that the back plate over the ring stand piece breaks off easy, and again, unless you're an extremely rough person by nature, I don't know how it could break. All I did was turn the monitor over, grab the bottom and pull it off, snap the ring stand on, and push it back in. No idea how you could bust it.

The monitor doesn't come with directions, but you really don't need them anyway, it's very simple. The monitor does get dusty because it's such a glossy sleek black, but that's easily fixed with a quick clean rag, not a big deal.

It's thin, beautiful, fast and has a good picture, and a reasonable price, so it gets my recommendation.

Plus it comes with a DVI/HDMI convert. cable.

5 out of 5 stars Shining light, ASUS does it again.   February 14, 2010

I've been a long long time suporter of ASUS products. And this is my first time buying a LCD from them.
Overall there is 0 problems with this monitor.

The stand as many complain about is a tad bit of a problem, but its not that hard to sight just
slightly at or above eyelevel with the monitor.Brightness is actually a problem. At 10million:1 this monitor
tends to be a fair bit to bright. (the preset settings) but with a few touches of your finger can quickly be fixed.

Color is very on par, and for a non $400 TN LCD this has the best color that I've seen in a TN monitor.
Reaction time is perfect, no ghosting in games, no text problems. The problem with HDMI + ATI cards resulting in a
loss of 1 inch boarder was fixed with the newer Video driver. And quite frankly this is the best monitor I've used.

Look and feel is great, yes its a fingerprint magnet. But on any desk it is quite a pretty sight. Very light and super
thin compared to many LCDs in the market.

TECH wise I'd rate this a 4.5/5 my only issue is it is still a TN monitor, (for those that don't understand TN is the
lowest quality form of LCD which is designed to be fast response bright, but not able to desplay perfect color, though
this monitor compared to non TN monitors)

Hardware wise 4/5 The ring stand doesn't go past 90* and if you set it to 90* it becomes rather unstable, wanting to fall
forward on its face, also the lack of mounting screws on the back would be a lovely addition. But the sleek design, and
personally the touch buttons work wonderfully well. Flaws yes, but for the price this is like a shining candle in the dark.

Overall 5/5 There are flaws, but when you sit back and think about it. For $200 it is a true BEST BUY. I dare anyone out
there to come up with a better deal. The screen performance is amazing, the touch buttons work perfect. And other than the
fact that it is overly bright, out of the box this monitor requires very little to no setup!
Also an added feature, which MANY people don't consider, the power converter seperate from the monitor, this has two positive
effects. Firstly as with many electronics, they die, BUT they die to a poped CAP. Which is fixable with a soldering iron for
under $1. From Motherboards, Videocards, Ipods, TVs Radios, the electronic market is filled with cheap Caps that will die and
many of the devices will be thrown away, when they could be easily fixed. With the power converter out of the monitor you don't
have to open the monitor, or even replace the cap. The unit is probably buyable at a very cheap price.
Secondly with the power converter out of the Monitor there is no extra weight. Which means moving this monitor is easy and less
of a pain.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars if i could   February 13, 2010

i will most likely have a different experience with this for now than most people who buy this monitor. I am a college student and have a netbook as my main computer while i save for a desktop. I am able to hook up my netbook to it via the vga and i gotta say it looks pretty good. The stand was a little confusing at first, it does look sleek and stylish though which is one of the reasons i chose this one. i also love that it has a hdmi input. i'm sure it will come in handy. i use it to watch tv shows and surf the internet when at home, SO much easier on the eyes than the little netbook screen.

i also owned the samsung 2233 screen which is very similar. i don't really want to get into comparing the two because they are used on different computers, and i havent had much luck tweaking the asus yet.

here is the main problem with the asus screen, other than the power button, the others don't respond well. Although the power one works very well. this can become annoying when you are going through the functions to adjust settings.

this samsung lacks things like hdmi however and has a very bright blue blinking light when in standby mode, the asus doesn't suffer from this, the asus just has a soft white light which even in a dark room is barely noticeable. honestly, i love both screens.

this asus is great, i would definitely recommend. i will be using it for casual use, just games and internet, maybe typing up things on word. not sure how it performs as far as photoshopper's standards go or people who do that type of thing. I have had it for 2 weeks now and it works great, other than the button thing i can't complain. i really would like to see how it looks when hooked up to a decent video card to the hdmi input. when i do this i will try and update.

ps: i did extensive shopping before finally landing on this one, i wanted an hd ready monitor and thats what i got. i wanted style, got that too. last of all i wanted a big screen, this thing fills all my needs for a low price. [...] has more reviews on this as well.

update

I now own a desktop with a decent graphics card and windows 7. so far everything looks and works amazing. HDMI is great. i have been playing left 4 dead 2 on this nice sized screen and watching HD video. what more can you ask for? works great aside from the touch buttons on front.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent display   June 5, 2010

If you are looking for a good monitor for regular browsing, web design/light photo-editing and movies (I don't game much, but I think this would be fantastic for gaming too), I think this is a stellar choice.

One of the first things I did when I got the display was to test for dead pixels - there wasn't a single one - so that was great. Next, I calibrated the display colours using Lutcurve.([..]). The gamma was off, but was easily fixed. The colours are vibrant, the contrast excellent. The blacks are not 'true' blacks if you are into digital photography, but at this price point, that is a very unreasonable complaint.

I was a little concerned that the stand might make the monitor less stable. The stand works fine - the monitor is pretty stable on my desk. However, I don't need to move it often, and the height of the desk is perfect, so I have no need for height adjustments - YMMV.

It looks great on the desk - very sleek, and it does not impose. Very impressive design.

This is not a monitor for a photography professional who needs to edit photographs (though you can pay much more cash and get worse monitors than this for doing that), but for everything else, it hits the sweet-spot between quality and cost.

Highly recommended. Typical ASUS quality - well designed, well built.
